AppData is a website that shows usage metrics for Facebook applications. If you've visited the "Links" page of this blog, you might have noticed the link to the AppData for Empires & Allies.
The two major usage metrics are DAU and MAU:
- DAU = Daily Active Users; the number of Facebook-authenticated users who used a particular Facebook application at least once in a given day
- MAU = Monthly Active Users; the number of Facebook-authenticated users who used a particular Facebook application at least once in a given month
AppData uses DAU and MAU as reported by Facebook.
AppData for Empires & Allies
Here's a labeled snapshot of the DAU for Empires & Allies over the last 30 days:
The Depot Hack was patched on April 12, 2012, which is 5 days earlier than the start of this graph. The Survival Mode Hack was patched on May 3, 2012. On May 14, 2012, many players reported having most of their Tier 8 units taken away. It's not far-fetched to think that these actions by Zynga has turned away many players who enjoy using exploits in the game.
The graph shows a steady decline in the DAU from around 1.8M to 1.3M over the last month. That's a drop of 28%. Over the last few days alone, the DAU decreased 13% from 1.5M to 1.3M.
This decline in DAU for Empires & Allies over the last month is not a recent trend. The game reached its peak in popularity soon (within a couple of months) after its June 2011 release and has steadily declined since then.
Top Applications Leaderboard
The Top Applications Leaderboard shows that Empires & Allies has dropped to #44 with a MAU of 11M. Interestingly enough, a major new competitor, Playdom's "Marvel: Avengers Alliance", has grown explosively in the last couple of months. It's already up to #53 with a MAU of 8.4M.
